Kent Wins Gold at Pan Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico

Table tennis contributed two medals to the Canadian tally today - a gold by Ian Kent (Eastern Passage, NS) and a silver by Stephanie Chan (Richmond, BC).

Kent had the early gold medal game today, competing in the men's classification 8 category against Paulo Salmin of Brazil. The first set was a hard fought affair, with Kent dropping the first set 7-11. In the second set Kent jumped to an early 3-0 to take the set 11-4. Kent also took an early lead in third set, winning 11-5. He closed the match out to win gold in the fourth and final set with a score of 11-3.

"This was very different from my other wins," commented Kent. "This was a very cerebral match, with ball control, not power at a premium. My opponent was young and he had trouble with the spin. It was great to win gold for Canada."

Later in the day, Stephanie Chan played for the gold medal but lost in a back-and-forth match to Jane Rodriguez of Brazil, 10-12, 7-11, 7-11.

Coming up next in table tennis, Kent plays doubles with Masoud Mojtahed (Austin, TX) on Wednesday.
